How Bowhunting Records of Alberta Came to Be

In 1980, 40 years ago, I was holidaying in California and came upon a copy of “Bowhunting Records of California” in a San Francisco Archery Shop.  When I returned to Alberta I checked the Pope & Young Record Book and was surprised to find that only 20 animals in total had ever been taken in Alberta that surpassed Pope & Young’s minimums.

As an avid bowhunter, and a Pope & Young scorer, I started working with all of Alberta’s official Pope & Young measurers to record the Alberta records for posterity.  My first publication, 37 years ago (1983), had only 78 animals that surpassed Pope & Young minimums.  You will find in this 2020, 38th edition of Ryk Visscher’s Bowhunting Records of Alberta over 4500 entries of 11 different Alberta species!
